Sitting still in the bush
a fly buzzing nearby
the river flowing out
of Africa, hippopotamus
floating islands, white egrets
on their backs, plucking
insects from dark flesh
lions hunched in the grass
along the water, watching
timid gazelles drink.
I can hardly breathe, to tell
coming here for a new life
in a foreign jungle, survival:
love verses physical sustenance.
