HOLE

The hole that caused the fatal accident
since well-marked, became less threatening
heavy rains, filling cracks, washing out
under-bedding, collapsing asphalt opening
a gap, like termites that attack a weak tree
finding an unguarded entryway, multiplying
in numbers, feeding on the fibers, until
the top branches overcome the trunk
on a windy day, our compromise with
debilitating habits, vice enticing, a welcome
open door, exposing our center, to attach
its incendiary device, before it is too late:
succession of houses fall, neglect of wisdom’s walls.
