A chatter of parrots in the palms
insistent conversations in a winter
calm, listening, since Leibniz first
declared our universe was as rigid
as speculative imagination.  A day
that is gray, a sun shielded by layers
of thick heavy clouds, cool, complete
in shade, a draft blows in rattling
leaves, frowns acknowledging
parrots lift, darting over their tight
elliptical trajectory, my mind imagines
the importance of their maneuvers
convinced that life has no cause for me
other than an element in variation’s
field, the sky darker still, foreboding rain.
