           FATHER’S DAY

I never understood what love was
believing culturally that sacrifice
to provide material security was
its evidence, failing to learn that
in poverty affection may flourish
today, centuries of vision in words
like fire, burn my bone’s marrow
bent before age’s scene of decaying
void foretold biblically in prophecy
as a prophet also held me as a child
declaring my destiny in simple bliss
to proud parents loving me ever
later under constellation’s portent
spread across a moonless night that
Father’s love, bridged those distances
charting a final course to home.
