EMPYREAN

Trapped in mortality, its ignorance
and habits of mind, while the galaxies
are calling, starry heavens singing out
my eternal spirit restless, imprisoned
in its aging body as a caged lion
of the Tribe of Judah, its golden mane
fading, pacing its grotto everyday more
weary, an idle witness, vaguely remembering
the wind moving against the high grass
its tremulous quivering, rattling fears
as in Assyria or Beth-el where even
a prophet fell prey, under an enormous
African night sky, punctuated by vast
fields of light, luminous constellations
Regulus king of Leo to the water nebula
of Aquarius from the northern and
southern balance of Zuben in Libra
to the sheep head of Hamal in Aries
a celestial cross of orbs, the Lord’s
diadem, signaling expanse, an inheritance.
