Sitting on a church foundation stone
laid with pious intent, raising blocks
of mortar cured, uplifting, bending backs
with loads, penitent symbol for ages
heavy with authority, humbling simple gazes
questions for the foolish, blunders of
decision meant, long arguments of discontent
zealous discourse of mutable dissent
until the blood of martyrs sealed cement.
