I have lived this all before
no breeze, the flag hangs
limp in front of the bank
why live it all again, turning
in habit or routine, convention
cultural conditioning, music
now scored slowly, out of
this settled crater, ancient
caldera, the world unfolds
rapidly, from a summit view
of rim, the Pacific stretches
out, the last sinking of light
evening’s adieu, Lent passed
will this aged eagle open his wings
in hope to fly, Ash Wednesday
reconciled to rage before I die
final conquest, a last aura of life?
