Somebody is watching from beyond
their grave, ashes jarred, veil that we
are too thick to see, too bound up
with worldliness, who would be there
suffering our blunders, calling out
“now Jan” warning us of boundaries
a real voice, echoing in my head
as though, standing there, at my side
so many have gone before, even we
may be re-living, family team cheering
us on, our courage to live not counting
days or wishing it would end, but tall
upright we stand, life hitting us, insects
splattered on the grill or windshield
our guts and wounds are testimony of us.
