We search high ground
holding on tight, as long
days of cold and longer
nights of snow snap
in heavy rains, warming
temperatures burst
and lives are washed out
through fractured levies
undermined with water
cement foundations swept
off, flung from footings
adrift in turbulence, caught
in flux, drowned in a vortex
of broken boundaries.
