Reading a collection of poets
and their poetry, copyright 1965
all deceased, alive when
I was in college then, birds of
eternal song, caged to create
controversy, now have flown away
their biographies, academic detail
publication points, times of birth
swirl in irrelevance, yet lines of verse
so carefully spelled out, labored
on paper page, mystical society of syntax
reverberate, cannot be stilled, echo
in empty silence, their anxiety recoils, rebounds
shouts in dreams, mingles, congregates
a propagated disturbance on the surface
of sleep, until you wake and cross yourself
in motion, having heard the ocean seething
waves of words, the dead talking in your head.
