Lanterns shined blue and red
in white light, of Independence
night, torches opened paths
illuminated humble cottages
and porch, cast shadows on
forest walls, wings of circling owls
and bats, eyes of marsupials
blinked in darkness, disappeared
families gathered to a motherís call
hens scurried with their chicks
to roost, dogs loosed to set the guard
gate closed to seal the yard.
