The river tumbled the stones
edges broken off, smoothed
polished, rounded in the flow
colors accentuate, brighten
ancient magma transposed
metamorphosed passing time
when rendered finished end
glossy, appear refined pebbles
pulido en el flojo del rio
to roll together in the hand
metaphor for life’s perfecting
jostling, bumping, correcting
discipline that goes against
our grains, to bring out layers
rich veins of gold hidden there
new facets of noble character
patience in, as water works
days and nights of snow melt
spring runs to placid summer
meandering until rocks barely
exposed before fall of autumn
around we go, burnish shades
hum, all of life returns, finishing.
