OLD AGE OPENS A HOLE

Old age opens a hole, vacant space
portal that expands as virtue becomes
sacred again, time collapses
winnowing of years blows away
the chaff, leaving kernels of life
maybe a bushel of memory grains
that have shaped our journey, gathered
as silent words accumulate to fill a journal
empty, seemingly irrelevant, as a busy world
whirls, moves unaware, chasing tails.
