If language grounds music
a default modality setting it
apart, as more than words
yet allowing it to sing for itself
understood only through
divination, quality of divine access
boundaries of rests and notes
constructions that engender
meaning, yet inaccessible
developing variation, tonal syntax
segments existing in, at least
harmony and melody, simultaneity
and succession, flowing vitality
orderly, marked redolent portals
but lacking fixed lexical differences
then colored clouds, the sea
its somber voice, swells to breakers
stirring skies, hurricane force, share
context, import, sense of significance
life, vital impulse, driving existence
process as imagined by Paracelsus
Swiss alchemist, undine water spirits
mating with man, engendering soul
so musical coupling, choral coitus
create, a more complete wholeness.
