Epiphytes prefer trees, dead or alive
host of selected company, sitting
on branches or clinging to bark
most love fresh breeze, open view
unrestricted access to light
a guest not a parasite, they enjoy
their micro-climate high in a forest
canopy, moist air, plant, animal
reptile or bird debris deposited there
decomposing mulch for roots
to embrace, as seasons change
they adapt, pseudo bulbs store moisture
nutrients for months of drought want
thin sheathes of velamen protect
from dehydration or dry heat damage
dormant until the first rains celebrate
a new year of active growth, the aged
supporting puerile giddiness of youth.
