CONSOLATION

William Wordsworth wrote in 1815
that some write poetry “as a consolation
for the afflictions of life” accumulated
from early age, my mother, grandmother
some uncles, aunts saw in me, agility
for words, living beyond the actual
curiosity of drive to record, preserve
wonder, my diaries began in earnest
in the mid-1970s and have stayed with
since, their scribblings, later woven
into poems, daily synopsis, distilled life
my afflictions have been the threads
yarns, portentous vision on my loom.
