If we fail to control technology
it controls us, bits and bites
of electronic impulses, rats in a cage
we display behavior, soon to be
quantified and commercialized
words become abbreviations
thoughts incomplete, running
behind a signalman, his flags
set a pace, reading reduced
to crib notes then finger doodles
now sixty digit digital summaries
Shakespeare and Spenser aside
Donne prayed to protect us from
this common dilettante seducer
applied science arts, sirens on rocks
wreck us on sandy shoals, flows
of electrons in our vacuum heads
leaving us brain dead, dumb instead.
